Texas Hold Em Poker Betting Rules
In our How to Play section, you learned how a round of Texas Hold Em is played from the Buy-In down to the Showdown. Now we will teach you the Betting Rules of the exciting game of Texas Hold Em.
There are 3 types of Betting Rules in Texas Hold Em - Limit, Pot Limit, and No Limit. The latter has exploded in popularity, thanks to Chris Moneymaker's win at the 2003 World Series of Poker in Las Vegas and Doyle Brunson's introduction of the game to Las Vegas casinos a few years before. Since then, No Limit Texas Hold Em has found its way into practically every online Poker Room today and reigns supreme as the most popular form of Poker betting.
There are 3 options that a Poker Player has when playing No Limit Texas Hold Em online. He can either Check, Bet, Fold. If he opts to Check, he is matching the bet made previously. A check is sometimes referred to as a call. If the Player opts to Fold, he is discarding his hand and can no longer play in that round. If he opts to bet, then all other Players must either bet, fold, or raise the current bet. The minimum bet in No Limit is equivalent to the Big Blind and the max bet is equal to the total amount of the Player's chip stack. If a bet is made, the min amount a Player can raise is the size of the last bet. If a fellow Player bets $10 and you want to raise, the minimum raise you can make is $10, which makes the total bet $20. The min buy-in is usually 20 Blinds and the max is 100 Blinds.
Fixed Limit Hold 'Em is the 2nd most popular form of Texas Hold Em and is often referred to as a gentlemen's game, because it requires patience and a certain amount of finesse. In FL Poker, the Player cannot bet all their chips at once. Fixed betting limits are instituted and this sees the exploitation of many small edges. How big the pot gets is determined by the size of the bet. The Big Blind in FL is always equal to the amount of the small bet. Before and on the Flop, the Player bets in increments of the small bet and on the Turn and the River, the Player bets in increments of the big bet. So, for example, if you were the first person to bet and you bet $6, your next opponent could Call or Raise to a total of $10. If another opponent wanted to re-raise, he would have to bet $15.
You an only raise a certain number of times in FL before the betting is capped. The usual cap is 4 or 5 bets per Player. When betting is capped, the Players cannot raise but can only call or fold until the next hand is dealt.
In Pot-Limit Hold Em, you can bet any amount of money that is in the pot. You cannot bet your stack whenever you wish however. Pot Limit is not very popular. as it sister No Limit but it is picking up in popularity.

Only 1 bet and 3 raises can be made in a betting round when 3 or more Players are still in the hand. The betting is capped when the 3rd raise is made and Players only have the option of calling or folding. The minimum number of chips you can buy before your first hand is dealt is usually 50 - 100 times the Big Blind. There is no max number of chips you may buy at any time and you may add more chips to your stack at any time between hands. When a round has begun, you may only use the chips you had in play at the beginning of the hand during that round. Additional chips will not be "in play" until the subsequent deal.
If you're playing in a game where 2 Players go All-In for different amounts, the amount of the smaller stack is taken from the big stack and put into the pot. The difference is returned to the Player who went All-In with the big stack. If your stack size is less than the Small Blind, then your next bet is considered as All-In irregardless of your position. If your stack size is more than the Small Blind but less than the Big Blind, your next bet is considered All-In in any position other than the Small Blind, assuming they fold for their option.
