Important Poker Terms
When you start playing Poker, you will come across several terms that are important for you to know. Here we won't bore you with an entire Poker Glossary but will simply give you a list of words you will hear frequently.
- All-In - Betting all your chips
- Bad Beat - A term used when a lucky hand beats out a sure-shot Poker hand.
- Betting - The table stakes determine the bet amounts. If the table is a $10/$20 table, bets are $10 in the first 2 rounds and $20 in the last 2 rounds. In each round of betting, there is 1 bet and 3 raises.
- Blind Bet - As we explained earlier, this is the bet that is made by the Players to the left of the Dealer button BEFORE cards are dealt.
- Bust Out - When a Player loses all his chips.
- Buy-In - This is the first step in playing Poker. The Player must pay the buy-in fee in order to enter the game. The buy-in is 10x the amount of the minimum bet, so in the case of a $10/$20 table, the minimum buy-in would be $100.
- Call - A bet that is the same as another Player's bet.
- Fifth Street - See "River".
- Flop - When the 3 Community cards are dealt. This occurs in the 2nd round of betting and the cards are placed face up in the centre of the table for all Players can see.
- Fold - When a Player throws in his hand. He no longer can bet and is out of the game. A Player should only do this if he thinks his hand is not good enough to win or he can't successfully bluff his way to a win.
- Pocket Cards - During the pre-flop, each Player is dealt 2 cards face down. These are known as the Pocket cards. They are used along with the Community cards to make a 5-card winning hand.
- Pre-Flop - In the 1st round of betting, the Players receive 2 Pocket cards known as the pre-flop.
- Raise - The act of adding more money to the table.
- River - During the 4th and last betting round of Texas Hold Em, the final card called the River is dealt.
- Turn - During the 3rd betting round of Texas Hold Em, a 4th Community card is placed on the table. It is known as the Turn.
